Iddrisu Musah Superior a High Npp ranking member and Deputy CEO of the Forestry Commission, Tells Mps to spell out their mandate and core duties to constituents.
Musah Superior writes....
It does appear that our MPs are in trouble! People are justifiably demanding various forms of development in their communities. They insist that their Members of Parliament must provide resources/funding for both infrastructural and social developments. They say, they were told by the PCs now MPs that, when they get elected, they will "bring massive" DEVELOPMENT to the communities.
Our MPs are castigated, insulted, booed; and in some instances chased out of some communities.
Recently, the Majority Leader, Kyei Mensah Bonsu was molested, humiliated for what his constituents say was his "inability to fix" the bad roads in his constituents.
Thousands of citizens have the wrong impression that their MPs can do "everything". They insist the MPs should find them employment, pay their fees, pay their medical bills, build houses for them, pay rent, etc. This is completely unachievable! The MPs cannot meet these demands. Infact they do not have the power or resources to do so many things. Yes, they may be unable to tell you because of political correctness or convenience. The non Minister MPs are broke. After several deductions on their salaries, they are left with trifling cash.
Members of Parliament represent their constituents in many ways. They mainly do advocacy work for their constituents, make laws, unmake laws, scrutinize the work of the Executive, debate bills and policies. These are what MPs do; and NOTHING else.
Non Minister MPs earn little over 12000.00 Ghana Cedis. MPs share of the DACF is wholly inadequate. These allocations are meant for development projects in the constituencies. The funds doesnt come to them directly. MPs have to formally request for projects to be financed by MMDAs using the share of their DACF. Very recently there have been agitations by some MPs to increase their share of the DACF. Too much "burden" they say.
Clearly, an ordinary MP struggles to meet the numerous requests/demands for both infrastructural developments and individual persons personal challenges.
The bitter truth is that the MPs as Parliamentary Candidates wrongly or deliberately misinform the people about what they can do. They never spell out what they cant do.The reason is if they campaign pronoucing their proper roles and stop deceiving the people, they will receive little votes. At campaign events they display overwhelming persona of their ability to do "everything". They lie, disinform or misinform the voters to persuade or trick them to get hired. When they are finally given the mandate, it becomes extremely very difficult to now state the truth. Consequently thay are faced with unreasonable pressure to fulfil the "crazy" promises they made.
Some MPs have become mentally troubled. They hide in their own shadows, refuse to periodically go to their constituencies and completely make themselves unavailable. This is troubling.
Will you tell your constituents the truth and nothing but the truth as a PC asking for their votes? If yes, do you think you will be voted for telling them your job as MP is not to pay their children school fees, pay rent for them, pay for their weddings, pay for their children naming ceremonies, pay for funerals, build houses for them, buy them cars, finance their business, etc?
Is our legislature fit for purpose? Can we fix it when we deliberately lie to the people to get into Parliament? How about Parliament's oversight role? Can this be achieved when most MPs lie their way to Parliament?
